Xavier listened closely to Fengyu's tale. He already knew it well but he made sure to remember only the details she disclosed, letting something else slip that she didn't tell him would make her suspicious of him. And that was something he could do without.
Xavier saw the flicker of pain behind Fengyu's eyes and reached out to touch her hand comfortingly. It was a gesture he'd seen many humans use before and thought it seemed appropriate for the situation.
"Kill him?" Xavier asked, when Fengyu had finished speaking. "Not take him back home and have him tried for his actions?"

Fengyu looked up from the table when Xavier touched her hand, drawing a small measure of comfort from the gesture. Talking to this man about her troubles was strangely helpful, as if the process of sharing her pain had somehow lessened it.
"If he comes willingly I'm sure my uncles would listen to what he has to say, but this is hardly a matter that can be explained to the Taiwanese courts. This is not a task I asked for or want, but Mujing is a Sen. We are at least partially responsible for any evils he commits. It brings dishonor to us."
The Hunter shook her head unsure of how to explain the Eastern understanding of family honor to Xavier. Her concern over such matters would likely seem petty to a westerner, but the Sen family's loss of face was shameful to both to her immediate family and the gereration of hunters who had come before them.

Xavier tried to understand the idea of honour and dishonour but he couldn't make sense of it. As an angel he didn't do things for the sake of honour, he did things for the sake of good. He gave Fengyu a small nod to show that though he didn't understand it all, he understood that it was important.
"That's a big task for someone to undertake on their own," Xavier said. "I don't doubt your ability but... he is your brother, your flesh and blood, killing him on your own would be... difficult."

Xavier's nod made it clear that though he didn't fully understand the concept of family honor, he at least didn't think she was some sort of fratricidal monster. That was good good thing at least, her family had suffered enough from all of this without her doing more damage to the Sen name, and for some reason she honestly cared about what this man thought of her.
"We have protected other's for generations, heavy burdens are passed down from parent to child." Fengyu said softly in response. "You are right, this will be very hard task, I care for Mujing greatly."
Going after her brother would probably be one of the most difficult and important hunts of her life. Demons and spirits, no matter how powerful had rules to follow. Barriers they could not cross. Mujing was a trained hunter, he was well armed and well connected. Not to mention the siblings knew each others fighting styles inside and out.
"I am not alone though, God does not abandon us in times of need." The hunter flushed slightly, unused to speaking about her faith in front of near-strangers.

"You are right, this will be very hard task, I care for Mujing greatly."
Xavier frowned slightly, trying for a moment to figure out how it was that Fengyu managed to still love her brother, despite what he has done... and what he no doubt planned to do. But then he remembered, that he had just defended the life of somebody he still cared about, despite the fact that she had committed the worst possible crime among their kind. Family was a funny thing.
"I am not alone though, God does not abandon us in times of need."
He couldn't help the smile that spread across his face at this. It was good to see that her faith was still strong, despite what she was going through.
"You're right, he doesn't," he agreed. That was why he was here. God was not in a position to act on his own, that was why the angels had charges, so those who needed help would not be ignored. "I know he's helped me out more times than I can count."

Fengyu smiled softly at Xavier's response. It had been a long time since she had gotten to speak to another believer. Church had been one of her few college experiences, and the fellowship there was something she had dearly missed. The woman shook her head slightly, as if ridding herself on bad feelings. Already she felt lighter, sharing her pain with someone, even if he couldn't understand completely, had helped. "Thank you Xavier, it has been good to talk. I have been feeling far away from home."
"What about you? How are you a hunter?" Though the pair had already built up some measure of trust, Fengyu knew little about the other hunter. She was curious to find out about his story. As far as she knew, the western hunters had few lineages, many were victims who had turned their pain into swords--she hoped that this was not the case with Xavier.

"Thank you Xavier, it has been good to talk. I have been feeling far away from home."
Xavier was extremely pleased that he had managed to be of some help. It had been a long time since he had had such direct contact with a charge and was not sure how things would unfold. But it was going well, if it were possible, Xavier thought he might even feel a little proud.
"What about you? How are you a hunter?"
Ah. Talking about himself, or rather, his fictional self. He hadn't thought that far ahead. He guessed the truth would be the best response.
"Hunting's in my blood," he explained. "My family has been destroying evil for a very, very long time. Much like your own family." Okay, so it wasn't the whole truth. But he wasn't allowed to tell her the whole truth. And he wasn't sure she would even believe him if he did. "I never really thought about doing anything else."

Fengyu nodded at Xavier's explanation of his origins. His family did indeed sound familiar to her own. It didn't surprise her that he had never thought of doing anything else. With the knowledge of the supernatural came the urge to protect others from it. That part had not really struck her until college, when her first roommate became so frighted over a horror movie that she had insisted they sleep with the light on. Fengyu couldn't imagine how the girl would handle the knowledge of the real monster that roamed the world. Most couldn't, so they needed to be protected.
"Your family," she said with a small smile, "so do you have sibling?"
She was actually curious to know more about the man who sat across from her. Talking to him made her feel better about things. Sure tomorrow she would wake up and have to hunt down her own brother, but that was tomorrow. Borrowing trouble from the next day wouldn't make things better. Fengyu had learned to enjoy things while she could, a hunter didn't see them too often.

"Your family... so do you have sibling?"
The angel returned her smile and nodded. "I have many siblings," he explained. Though that was an understatement. He actually had thousands of siblings, but they didn't need to get into that. "All of us hunt." Hunt, smite evil... it was all the same. "Well... except one."
Xavier frowned slightly, realising suddenly how similar his angelic family issues where to Fengyu's. He didn't even have to lie all that much to make it fit. Fengyu's brother had left the family to serve evil... Xavier's brother had left the family to be evil... all sorts of strange coincidental parallels. Perhaps that explained why he could sympathise with her so well.

"Well... except one."
Xavier had frowned slightly after mentioning his sibling that did not hunt, and Fengyu wondered what about this brother or sister caused such a reaction. It could be simply that he did not approve of him or her not following the family tradition, though that did not fit with with her overall impression of the man. Perhaps there had been a falling out? Or an injury? She almost asked him, but realized such a question would not be tactful. The story of Mujing was necessary to explain her motivations, Xavier had a right to keep his family private life from a near stranger. If he felt like expanding on his family history, then he would do so in his own time.
"Many siblings? That must have been maddening at times. Mujing and I were quarrelsome enough as a pair, let alone when our cousins were also present." There was a slight twinge in her chest when she mentioned her brother, but Fengyu ignored it. The years before Mujing's betrayal had significance to her that should remain as untainted as possible.

Xavier was impressed that Fengyu managed to speak of her brother the way she was. He imagined it would be difficult to remember she had grown up with Mujing, considering what she would need to do very soon.
"No, it wasn't maddening," he said, aloud. "We all got along pretty well, actually, though my father might have had something to do with that."

Fengyu was about to ask Xavier how his father had managed to keep order between a large number of siblings when he cell phone went off. Its lyrical chiming reminded the woman that it was well past time for her daily phone call home. Whichever member of her family that was on the other end would undoubtedly be worried about her by this hour. More than likely she was in for a very long conversation with her mother.
"Sorry," Fengyu said shooting the other hunter an apologetic look, "my family. I should go now."
Sliding out of the booth, the foreign woman hit the call button on her phone and answered respectfully in Chinese. As expected, it was her mother. With one backwards glance to Xavier, she walked out of the restaurant.
