Sam flinched back as Ruby and then Dean came crashing into the bathroom. It wasn’t that he hadn’t expected them not to come it was just through his pain clouded mind they were rather loud and violent for him at the moment. His eyelids felt heavy and his eyes shifted down to the streaks of blood which were pouring from his arms and he knew that he needed to stop bleeding soon or he was going to bleed out on the floor and that would be that.
He tried weakly to pull his arms against his chest to stop the blood flow that way but before he could he watched as Ruby slit her palm expelling her own blood and pain flared in his arm again as she pressed her hand against his open wound. He gritted back a groan of pain at the pressure but couldn’t help but feel more then slightly worried with the fact that Ruby…being a demon had just mixed her blood with his.
“What are you doing?” Sam managed to ask weakly his eyes going in and out of focus as blood continued to pour from the gashes. Sam was totally confused by whatever was happening around him and none of it was making much sense. The pounding in his head seemed to stop though once Ruby finished her incantation which was a giant help.
He looked confused as Dean turned from the room and before he could even protest had returned hauling Ruby off of her feet and aiming the Colt at her. Sam shifted weakly trying to keep his eye strained on Dean and Ruby but his strength was going just about as fast as his blood was.
“Dean don’t,” he managed to whisper leaning his head back against the wall and shivering slightly as he was pretty sure he felt himself slowly slipping into shock. His eyes fell closed for a moment but snapped open once more with a jerk as he heard his brother’s panicked voice call out for him; it was a call he had grown familiar with over the years.
“I don’t think so…” he managed to whisper his eyes dropping again to the blood which had collected around him. Ruby had stopped the assault for now just like she had said it was only dealing of the after effects which was the problem now.
“That’s a lot of blood,” Sam whispered his words slow and slightly slurred as he tried to look back over at Dean weakly but failed and instead focused on shivering and staring down at his own blood which surrounded him. He let his eyes slip shut again as his head rested against the wall and his breathing became shallow.

Ruby for sure knew what she was doing, though she was definitly thrown off track slightly when Dean grabbed her out the bathroom and away from Sam. Though she had got what ever was out of him now, she was glad she had done it before Dean had decided to be confrontational.
Finding herself with her back against the wall and the Colt pointed at her, most demons would quiver at that, but with just one bullet, as much as Dean hated her, she knew he would shoot her. She let him shout at her for a moment, finding it easier to deal with the older brother when he had let off a bit of steam. "I just saved your brother." She retorted with a calm, somewhat serious face. Although she knew Dean could do a lot of damage even without a gun, so was slightly wary though didn't show, she was good at hiding things like that.
She glanced over at Sam as well, the same time as Dean did, seeing him still on the floor, though he looked like he was recovering slightly, although Dean seemed worried about him, hardly surprising though. Though it wasn't long before his attention had been turned back to her, even when Sam said something, he wanted to know. Well she had tried to explain before but obviously he wasn't going to listen.
Ruby hissed slightly when Dean slammed her shoulder hard against the wall with his hand, and then used her other hand on her other side to quickly disarm the Colt from Dean's other hand, twisting it up with her extra strength, and throwing it on the bed behind them. "I just got rid of what ever was harming your brother." She spat back at Dean, looking to Sam for another moment. "He's been cursed, by that bitch Meg, his defences are down, and he's open to any demonic attack out there." Ruby explained softly to Dean, out of Sam's hearing, not wanting to worry him for the moment, enough though he was pretty much out of it. "I've manage to counteract it, but it won't last for long. You need to find Meg, and get rid of her, or at least get help. I don't know how long my spell will last." She told him with another glance to Dean. "Don't you think we should try and move him at least so he's not sitting in a pool of his own blood?" She said, perhaps a little too bluntly than she meant. "You can yell at me later if you think it'll solve anything." She told him, though not moving until Dean let go of her, she was trying not to push him over the edge anymore than he was already going.

Dean's eyes drilled into Ruby's as she began to explain what she had done to Sam and how what she had done had momentarily stopped Meg's attack upon him and he glanced back at Sam for the briefest of moments. His attention however was soon snapped back to Ruby as she deftly disarmed the gun from his hand and tossed it upon the nearest bed.
Placing his free hand against her other shoulder and pinning her harder against the wall, Dean struggled to come to terms with all that she had told him and his face twisted in pain. The pain of keeping his emotions in check, the pain of struggling to hold back the anger that was driving through him. Anger he had no idea who he was meaning to aim it at. “You....” Dean's breathing became erratic as he stared back at Ruby and the emotions that he had tried to keep in check bubbled over with a single tear that snaked its way down his cheek. Whipping it away angrily and forcing Ruby back into the wall which sent shards of plaster board billowing out behind her, Dean once more attempted to speak.
“You put your blood....your filthy....Demonic....you just....” Dean's attention was pulled away from Ruby and back to Sam as his voice called out weakly behind him and his reddened eyes soon found that of his brothers.
“I know Sammy....” he whispered, still hoping, and failing, to maintain the level of confidence and strength in his voice that he knew his brother needed to hear. “We will sort it Sam....” he muttered, his eyes finding Ruby out of the very corners of them and he made his way into the bathroom.
Whipping at his eyes one more time and crouching down beside his brother, Dean lifted his arms up carefully, almost tenderly and heaved his brother up and over his shoulder. Making his way slowly into the motel room and lowering Sam down gently upon the bed, Dean took a gentle hold of his arms and surveyed the wounds with a grimace tearing across his face.
Leaving Sam, only briefly upon the bed and making his way back into the bathroom without a second glance at Ruby, Dean snatched up the whole pile of towels that lay over the rails within the small room and made his way back towards his brother. Affording only one cursory glance at Ruby, a look filled with nothing but hatred, Dean sat himself back down upon the bed beside Sam and began to carefully wrap the clean towels around the wounds in an effort to stop the blood flow.
“There is a bag....in the trunk of my car.” he muttered to Ruby “It has gauze...tape....medical...” Dean allowed a small growl to fall from him as his words were snatched from him in a fit of anger and he wrenched himself up from the bed and made his way in front of Ruby again. “Don't you ever....ever touch him again....” he spat, though the anger that laced his voice previously was now simply replaced by fear.
Turning away from Ruby and feeling his fists clench of their own accord Dean, without even second thought nor moments hesitation, span on the spot and drove it clean into Ruby's face. His whole body shook with rage, rage aimed not at her per se, but what she meant and he made his way back to Sam. “The keys are on the dresser....if you want to help....then get what I asked.” he muttered, his eyes never leaving Sam “If not then get the Hell out of here.” he spat.

Sam felt the moment Dean crouched down in front of him and he sluggishly opened his eyes fighting to focus on Dean. He tried to say something else but Dean quickly hauled him up and out of the bathroom. It felt as if his arms and legs weighed a ton and he groaned softly as Dean placed him down upon the bed his blood immediately stinging the sheets.
Sam gazed back at dean his vision going in and out of focus as he fought to stay conscious. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion as dean got up from the bed and walk away from him. He looked down at the gashes which littered his arm biting his bottom lip to hold in the whimpers of pain. He took a few steadying breaths, trying to get himself under control – Winchester’s didn’t cry.
“Dean?” He tried not to sound whiney as he called his brother’s name but his voice still came out small and weak. A faint look of relief washed over his face as his brother came back.
“You came back?” Sam’s voice was thick with confusion and pain and he sounded weaker and weaker by the second. He flinched and flinched as Dean wrapped the towels against his wounds and he tried weakly to struggle away from the assaulting sensation the action sent ripping through his arms.
Sam was oblivious to what transpired between Dean and Ruby as his eyes lay locked with the ceiling till dean returned to his side once more. His eyes shifted away from the ceiling and looked up at Dean his face pale and looking much younger then his 23 years.
“I got blood on the floor Dean…” Sam muttered his eyes staring up at the ceiling as if he was looking straight through Dean. He had lost too much blood and the trauma to his system from the last few hours had taken a major toll on him and he was nowhere near a stable frame of mind.
“Dad…dad’s gonna be mad…made a mess,” he whispered his eyes finally shifting slightly and looking back at Dean his brown eyes wide with a mix of panic and fear. Sam sucked in a sharp gulp of breath for a moment as a sudden pain in his abdomen brought back all too quickly the memories of the blood he had thrown up a few moments ago.
Sam’s eyes suddenly shown with tears as he looked back at Dean and struggled slightly against the pressure being put against his wounds.
"You were gonna leave me…you were gonna die and you were gonna leave me…" Sam whispered weakly his mind harking back to those hours upon hours he had all but killed himself trying to find a way to fix his brother’s damaged heart.
"Don't leave me." The tears now slipped down his cheeks as his concentration was torn through so many different thoughts and emotions ranging from when they were kids to the last few months since they had been back together.
“Jessica did…she left…he took her Dean…he took her and he wants to take you and…I love her and he took her...and they want to take you and dad...and then I'll be alone...,” he whispered a few more scattered tears seeping from the corner of his eyes and soaking into the pillow behind his head. His eyes slipped closed for a moment and his breathing ceased for several seconds before resuming again in a small shallow gasp of air as his eyes snapped open again still disoriented and panic stricken.
"I'm tired," he whispered his eyes struggelign to stay open and his finegrs gently shifting around the end of the towel his brother had used to wrap around his arm.

Dean clutched his now bruised and bloodied hand to his chest as Sam called out to him and he kept his eyes solely on his younger brother, the fear and emotion still ever evident behind his eyes. “Course I came back....” he said quietly, reaching behind Sam and sorting the pillows out beneath his head before allowing his eyes to lock with his “Can't get rid that easily...” he mumbled.
Dean's eyes flickered to the floor as Sam mentioned the torrent of blood he had lost in the short time that had past and he grimaced as the stark red slammed through his vision. “It's only a few drops...” he lied “Nothing that can't be gotten out with a bit of elbow grease....” he added quickly “But don't worry...I will make sure you are well enough before I slap the mop in your hand and set you to work...” he attempted to joke quietly, yet his facial expression and the tears that threatened to fall again caused it to fall flat.
Dean glanced around the room in hopes of finding some more bindings for Sam's arms and the words that Sam whispered regarding their father and the blood sank in, all be it slowly. “Dad can go screw....” he muttered quietly, though maybe not so quietly that Sam could not hear.
As Sam's tear filled eyes latched onto Dean's and the pleadings that fell from his mouth slammed into Dean's very soul, he struggled within himself to hold back the new wave of emotions that forced their way up. “You forget that I'm Dean frigging Winchester dude...not getting rid that easy, stupid petty thing like a heart attack isn't going to....”
Dean's words froze upon his lips as Sam mentioned Jessica's name and he removed his hands slowly and gently from Sam's wrists. “I'll.....I'll get the bag Ruby....” he muttered, his eyes finding Sam's momentarily before making his way to the door “I'll be back Sammy...” he mumbled.
The cold air outside of the motel rushed up to meet Dean and stung the raw skin about his blood shot, tear stained eyes as he made his way all but blindly to his car. The sight of the Impala, his baby, on any other day would have filled Dean with a sense of happiness no-one else could quite comprehend, yet now tonight as he reached the trunk of his pride and joy and leaned heavily upon the cold metal of it, he allowed every wave of emotion to crash over him before he toppled to his knees.
Dean's breathing came out ragged, forced as he tried to push back the wave of tears threatening to break their way through and as he failed and allowed them to fall, his mind harked back to the words Sam had spoken. Jessica, his girlfriend, the one Dean had dragged Sam away from, the girl who could have offered Sam something he wished for him more than anything, a normal life. A normal life now shattered by the one demon that had already plagued their family. Dean knew he would never speak on this with Sam, the hatred he felt towards himself for all but begging, pleading and dragging Sam away from the girl. The heartache he felt when he knew that had he stayed she may still be alive, may have survived if Sam had stayed.
Dean's actions, his every move since his brother joined him on the road had been nothing but selfish, ego driven and senseless and as his body shook and caved in with the tears of so many months of bottling them up, he drove his fists clean into the concrete beneath him.
“I'm sorry Sammy....” he gasped, his words falling out strained and gut wrenching as he allowed his anger and his sadness to crash over him in waves and tore himself up off the floor and wrenched the trunk of the car open.
Rifling through the trunk and retrieving the bag he needed, Dean leaned heavily against the open trunk and allowed his eyes to stare at the half open door of the motel. “I never wanted for any of this....” he groaned, his words faltering as his blood shot eyes continued to stream with tears.
Slamming the trunk closed and tossing the bag over his shoulder, Dean frantically rubbed at his face with the back of his hand and struggled to dry the tears away. Pushing his way back into the room and making his way over to Ruby without a second glance at Sam just yet, Dean pushed the bag into her arms and stared at her “Help him.....make sure he is ok...” he mumbled before turning back towards Sam.
Snatching up the colt and pulling the hammer back, Dean eyed the single bullet still left in the barrel of the gun and replaced the hammer gently. Setting himself beside Sam, Dean placed his hand on the back of his head and lifted him carefully to look at him. “If she tries anything...anything at all...” he whispered, his own hand fumbling to place the Colt into Sam's “End her....” he added softly.
“I'm sorry Sammy....so goddamn sorry...” he mumbled “I can't let you....I have always been the one to....protect you, I can't stop now” Dean quickly rubbed his hand over his mouth and stared down at Sam “Don't hesitate to use it....” he whispered, pushing the gun into Sam's hand once more.
“I'll see you soon Sammy...” he added quietly and after shooting one glance at Ruby, he stood up and made his way to the door “If you get a lead on where she is,” he spoke to Ruby, the low growl quickly returning to his voice “You call me and you leave a message.” he added quickly.

Dean in a mood...Something Ruby was very wary about, and very cautious. He had been known to be quite dangerous when something had effected Sam or him, though mainly Sam. She herself had long forgotton what it was like to have a family but she wasn't to bothered by that now. She was brought crashing back to earth when Dean pushed her forcefully against the wall, so hard that she made an indent in the wall. She was getting slightly pissed off with him now, who was he to think he could push her around when all she was doing was trying to help.
She could tell he was being hurt by what had happened to Sam, but he was going to have to get used to it, she thought to herself. She watched as she let Dean pick Sam up himself, distancing herself slightly, something to do with that brother bonding thing even when they were injured. She nodded slightly when he mentioned there was a medi-kit type thing in his trunk, but before she knew it he was in front of her again. "I had to..." She started slightly more aggressively when Dean started turning away. Yeah he may blame her completly, but it wasn't her that actually cursed him. But before she could finish that sentence She had Dean's fist in her face, which made her take a step back before recovering quicker than a normal person anyway. "Well thats your last free hit." Ruby growled slightly, resisting the urge for her eyes to go black. Yeah he might be angry, but he had really pissed her off, no matter how much blame that he wanted to pin on her.
She moved over to Sam's side when Dean left the room, rubbing her face slightly where Dean had hit her. Although she wanted to concentrate on Sam, she couldn't help but want to make sure that Dean was okay. Although maybe a bit of fresh air would be good for him, she thought.
Seeing Dean enter the room, Ruby immediatly spotted his face and his eyes, seeing that he had been crying, but didn't say anything, taking the bag that Dean shoved in her hands. Watching him talk to Sam, and give him the Colt, a look for slight curiousness and puzzlement crossed her face. From what it sounded like Dean was going to go somewhere, and without the Colt. When he started to walk out the room and spoke to her, she frowned at him, glancing at Sam and then at him. "And where are you gonna go? You can't just leave your brother Dean. Tell me what you're doing." She said to him, looking straight at him, whilst rumaging through the bag getting gauze and tape, and the other things to help Sam out.

Sammy forced his eyes open not trusting himself to close them and knowing it probably wasn’t the best course of action in his current state anyways. He kept losing his focus and that was driving him crazy; no matter how hard he tried to keep a grasp on the here and now he would slip backwards and tumble God only knew where.
“Dean…where you going?” Sammy asked his voice low and broken as his brother pulled away from him and headed out the door. He didn’t know where Dean had gone but he figured it couldn’t have been that far after all he had only just promised him even if it was in a weak and delusional state that he wouldn’t leave. His eyes shifted down to the towels Dean had wrapped around the gashes, the fabric now stained a dark and angry crimson red.
He shifted his head slightly as Ruby was at his side now that Dean was gone, through everything he had all but forgotten she had been there for a moment. Not that he knew exactly what he was supposed to say but silence mixed with pain and delusion was never any good either.
“Hi,” he whispered weakly trying to focus on her and not on the pain or the fact that his brother had left for the moment.
Sam’s eyes immediately shot from ruby to dean as he came back into the room carrying their first aid bag. Made sense of course it was a better alternative to bleeding to death. It was everything that happened next that Sam didn’t understand. He watched silently as Dean passed the bag off to Ruby and then went to get the Colt again.
Sam didn’t understand what the hell Dean was getting on about as he placed the Colt into his hand the cold metal biting into his skin made him shiver slightly.
“Dean…” Sam started to protest but stopped as Dean continued on with what could only be interrupted as a goodbye speech; but that couldn’t be right, he wouldn’t just leave without Sam. They had started this again together and they were supposed to see it through together. Sam glanced at Ruby for a mer second trying to see if she understood what it was that was happening but his eyes snapped back to his brother who pulled away and made his way towards the door.
“Dean?” Sam called out desperately after his brother trying to force himself to have the strength to sit up. He pushed himself slightly against the head board with a groan of pain at the pressure it put upon his arms and at the new torrent of blood he felt soak into the towels.
“Dean?!...Where are you going?” Sam asked again his voice shaking and slightly more breathy then his strained lungs would have liked for it to be; but he had to stop him. The fact that his brother was leaving with out the Colt cut through the pain and everything else like a knife. His brown eyes locked with Dean who stood near the door and all but pleaded with him silently not to go, not to do anything stupid on his account.
“Don’t go…please…” and knowing it was a low blow but knowing he had to do it anyways he pulled the last card he had left to him which might get through to Dean.
“Please Dean…don’t leave…you promised …you promised you wouldn’t leave…” Sam whispered having to lean back against the wall his face pale and a thin coat of sweat gathered upon his forehead from the exertion on his already weak body. Sam blinked feverishly trying to clear his vision of the black spots which were trying to consume him. he had to stay with it and he knew if he passed out that would be that but he was fighting a losing battle and he had lost entirely too much blood for his body to hang on any longer then it already had.
“Please,” he whispered once more his voice barely audible as his eyes rolled shut and his body slumped backwards as he lost consciousness.

Dean's eyes never left Ruby after he had finished his instructions and they drilled into hers as she began to all but call him out on his decision to go, now of all times. “You know where I am going...” the growl in his voice meaning it came out forced, bitter and low and he shook his head quickly “Just...do as I asked...please....” he added more softer this time as his eyes dashed to Sam and then back to Ruby.
His hand lay upon the handle of the doorway as Sam's voice called out behind him and Dean struggled within himself not to do the cowardly thing and simply walk out. Turning back to Sam and allowing his hand to slowly drop from the handle, Dean locked his reddened eyes with the wide ones that belonged to his brother and he shook his head frantically “Don't do this Sammy....not this, not here...not now...” he pleaded desperately. “Don't make me leave like this Sammy....please....” he begged, the desperation all too evident in his voice.
Dean's body slumped against the doorway of the motel as his eyes refused to lock with those of his brother, knowing full well if he continued to look at Sam his whole resolve would break.
The whole “do not look at your brother” plan was all shot up the ass however as Sam's voice broke away and Dean's eyes immediately latched onto the now still form of his brother. His body sagged as he realized Sam's body had given up the fight against the blood loss and he buried his face in his hands. He knew he had things to say to Sam, things he had bottled up. Things he had to say before...before whatever happened, happened. And he knew that time was now.
Pushing himself away from the wall and making his way back over to his brother, Dean placed himself on the edge of the bed and refused to even look at Sam. His eyes stared out of the darkened motel window and he struggled within himself for the words to use. “I'm sorry Sam...for all of this.” he whispered quietly “You and Jess...you had it all for Gods sake and I....tore you apart and I ruined it all for you....” Dean glanced quickly back at Sam and then returned to staring back out of the window. “I know you blame yourself, that you saw it all before it happened but me...if I hadn't have...if Dad....hadn't....Goddamn it!” he growled deep within his chest and buried his face once more in his hands “None of this is your fault Sammy....” he whispered into his now tear drenched palms “After all this....you can have what you deserve....I will make sure you are safe Sammy...” Dean stood up slowly and leaned over his brother, the paleness of his skin glaring back at him, taunting him almost and as he trailed a hand gently over the stray fringe that fell across his face, Dean allowed one solitary tear to trickle down. “Apple pie life Sammy....” he added quietly.
Dean tore himself away from the bed and paced the small space at the end of the bed, his eyes drilling into Sam and as he forced himself to a standstill and turned on the spot to face Ruby, Dean shook his head and his eyes all but pleaded with her. “If you hurt him....or even just....so help me God I will slaughter you myself....” he whispered, though the anger entirely vacant from his voice. “I don't even know why the hell I am even trusting you but.....keep him safe...until all this is over....please....” he whispered.
Hastening one more glance at his brother, Dean made his way back over to the doorway and stood upon the threshold, his eyes fell upon the Impala in the parking lot, illuminated beneath the dim street light and without so much of a second glance back, he slung his small bag over his shoulder and made his way out of the motel and did not stop walking until he had slammed the door of the Impala behind him.
His knuckles turned white as his hands gripped the steering wheel as if his very life depended on it. The severity of what lie before him slammed into him and as he pulled his cell phone from his pocket, flipped it open and stared at the long list of missed calls, Dean held the power button down and watched emotionless as the screen went blank before him. Snapping it shut and tossing the cell on to the backseat, Dean started up the engine and, without second thought, slammed his foot down and gunned himself and the Impala into the darkened night.

Ruby was just a little unsure about Dean, this must have totally rattled him if he was willing to leave Sam here with her, when she knew how he felt about her. "I'll do it Dean, but you better come back to your brother soon." She replied to him firstly, with a slight warning in her voice, as she watched him go over to his brother again, and looked like he was having second thoughts about going.
She was a little relieved when he looked like he was staying, but no such luck...It seemed Dean was really going, even when Sam looked at death's door more than before. She moved away from the bed a few steps back when Dean was talking to his brother, letting them have a semi-private moment. It was like he was saying goodbye from him for good, and just hoped that wasn't the case. They both needed each other, and she just wondered what Sam was going to think when he became conscious again and just saw her.
"Just come back soon Dean, or there will be hell to pay." She told him with a slight warning tone as Dean left the motel room somewhat solumly.
She moved back to Sam on the bed and pulled out some of the gauze, bandages and tape, and put them next to him, before going back to the bathroom, and dampening some towels to help clean his wounds. Bringing them back into the main room, she took Sam's jacket off after propping him up whilst he was still unconscious and pushed his sleeves up so she could see the wounds. They were bad, and she didn't like the looks of them, but she figured she'd got to do the best she could. Removing the original blood soaked towels that Dean had used firstly, she cleaned up his right arm as best she could with one of the towels before putting the gauze tightly around the cuts, so hardly any blood could get through, although she had a feeling the gauze and bandages would have to be changed in a few hours. After taping the gauze, she put the bandages round it to hold them in place, and then moved slowly round to the other side of the bed, keeping an eye on Sam as she did so.
She rolled his left arm sleeve up, but dabbed the clean wet towel on his forehead before moving it to his arm, to clean up the blood. "Can't believe Dean left me babysitting." She muttered as she glanced around the room, before carrying on with what she was doing, wondering how long Sam was going to be out for.

Sam had lain motionless on the bed in the motel as Ruby had dressed and covered the wounds on his arms. His breathing was shallow but steady and his color slowly returned to him after 2 hours of lying deathly still. For the first time though in a very long time his unconscious mind was completely and utterly blank whatever Ruby had done she had done a very good job at it…while it lasted anyways.
He could slowly begin to feel the tug of consciousness pull at the warm blackness which had encompassed him and a low groan passed his lips as he pried his eyes open and stared for a moment utterly confused at the ceiling above him. For a few blissful seconds he couldn’t remember a thing about what had happened or the newest kind of “special” hell they had found themselves in this go around. But those moments were few and far between and within a few more seconds it all came crashing back over him along with the pain in his arms.
“Dean?” It was an old habit he had since he was a kid. Whenever he had been hurt or sick or whatever he had always sought out his brother first and foremost no matter what. When he was sick as a kid it had always been Dean he would turn to and not their father, not that he didn’t love his father in his own way but Dean was his constant and he always sought him out.
The silence which answered his call was in no way a comforting sound and he blinked a few times gingerly bringing his right arm up to scrub at his eyes as the room came into focus around him.
“Dean?!” The call was more urgent the second time having lost any of the fog of disorientation. No answer…no smart ass remark…no pillow thrown from halfway across the room…no noisy chewing…or loud music…nothing. Dean was gone. The realization that his brother had actually left hit Sam like a ton of breaks and his body jerked upwards and immediately regretted it as pain flared through his body. His eyes panic stricken desperately searched the room for his brother but he came up empty and all he found was Ruby.
He looked at her hoping he didn’t look as crestfallen as he felt but he was almost positive he did; especially since he was still too weak to put up too much of a front.
“He left?”

After Ruby had finished with Sam's arms, she had paced around the small room for a little bit. Not that the room was that big, and still Sam was unconcious. She had wet his forehead with a flannel she had found in the bathroom - one of the only things that wasn't covered in blood - a couple of times to help him, keep him cool, and maybe perhaps try and wake him up. She wasn't really in that a patient mood, but she had to try and contain herself as she didn't want to leave Sam on his own.
In the end she had resigned herself to cleaning up the bathroom as best she could. It didn't really take much though for her to get rid of the blood on the floor and the blood soaked towels. At least the people who ran or cleaned this motel won't complain when they come to fix the room when Sam and Dean actually leave she thought to herself. Not that they could fine them or complain, seeing as she knew they were probably registered under fake names.
She was actually just finished in the bathroom when she heard Sam's voice call out for Dean. Somewhat softly but she heard it. Ruby came out of the bathroom and moved to the side of the bed, as Sam called out again for his brother who wasn't here. "Sorry Sam, he left a couple of hours ago. You've been out for a while." She stated almost to bluntly then she intended. "Though you have got some colour back in your cheeks, so thats something." She said with a small smile, and crossed her arms, moving and perching herself on the side of the bed, just watching Sam, to see how much he had recovered. She knew he certainly wasn't going to be to happy about knowing that Dean had gone, but it wasn't like he could catch him, after all he didn't have a car. He still had to recover anyway, and she certainly wasn't going to let him go anywhere until she decided he was strong enough.

Sam’s eyes remained locked with Ruby as she explained what Sam had already figured out in his mind but was hoping some how he had been wrong…apparently he hadn’t. Dean had actually left, he had gone off to do God only knew what and he had left Sam behind. Sam struggled to sit up straighter a million thoughts running through his mind about everything. He winced for a moment the jolt of sitting up sending rips of pain through his injured arms but he didn’t care at the moment.
“You let him go?...You let him just leave?...Alone!” The panic was more the evident in his voice as the realization came into full play for him. He struggled but managed to sit up fully his legs draped over the side of the bed as he sat up, he closed his eyes for a moment as a wave of dizziness swept over him. Finally forcing his eyes open Sam pulled himself up and on to his feet regretting it as pain pulled at his entire body but he didn’t have time to focus on that. He made his way over to the small table in the corner of the room where his laptop and phone were.
He all but collapsed down into the chair as he tore his phone open and his eyes grew wide as he saw he had a voice message.
Hey Sammy, boy am I glad this went to voicemail..
Guess you probably thought I would forget what today was huh? I kinda usually do don't I?
Happy Birthday Sam....Sorry I can't be there, you know I would if...
Just look out for yourself Sammy, there's a six pack under my bed. Knock yourself out...
See you soon Sammy.
That was it?! Dean ups and leaves going Christ only knew where and all Sam got was a birthday wish? To hell with that they had much more to deal with right now. He quickly dialed Dean’s number and wasn’t surprised as it dumped straight into voicemail. He left a message and looked back at Ruby at a loss for what to do. He knew he didn’t have the strength or anything else to do much of anything but he couldn’t let Dean go off to die. “Thanks for the help Ruby,” Sam whispered his eyes going down from the bandages around his arms. He needed time to think about what to do next and he couldn’t focus. His eyes shifted towards the bathroom and down to the fact he was still covered in blood and felt weak as hell.
“Not to treat you like a…well I don’t know but do you think maybe you could go and get us some food while I clean up and then maybe we can figure out what the hell we can do next?” Sam asked looking at Ruby not knowing what else to do at the moment.

Ruby knew that Sam was worried when she mentioned that Dean had gone, she could see the look he had on his face, and put her arms out slightly when he sat up and his face showed the pain he was obviously in. "I had to Sam." She explained to him, in a slightly softer tone of voice, "I would of followed him, but if I had you would of bled to death." Ruby said, not even bothering to stop Sam as he made his way, albeit unsteadily across the room to the chair, where she noted his 'technological gadgets' were. "You know I could of got them for you, if you asked me." She said with a slight frown, a little worried about the Winchester, who had just lost a hell of a lot of blood, and was trying to walk a couple of hours later...
Watching him listen to a message, which looked like had come from Dean, considering the look on Sam's face when he listened to it, she figured Sam would have liked to throw the phone somewhere at that point in time, but his strength was a bit zapped, and so didn't, which she was glad of. She stood up and moved across the room, as she heard him thank her for the bandages, and a small smile crossed her face. "Yeah no problem...Couldn't have ya dying on my watch." Ruby told him with a small shrug. "Well I'll go and get you some food, just try not to move to much...Otherwise you'll do worse to yourself, and we can't have that, can we?!" She said, telling him straight. Of course it wasn't his time to die, although Meg was having a hard time accepting that fact. She was going to have to find her to set a few things straight, Ruby thought to herself, as she made her way to the doorway. "I'll be back in a little while." She told him as she opened the door, and with one last glance at him, checking him over, she disappeared from the doorway as the door shut behind her, in a sudden, blink or you'll miss it moment.

Sam was still in total shock that Ruby had just let Dean go off by himself and that Dean had actually gone off and left him as if it was the most normal thing to do in the world.
“Me bleed to death or Dean get himself killed? Why is it everyone always feels the need tom look out for me and just let Dean drive himself off of a cliff?!” Sam asked the anger he felt towards the whole blessed situation ripping through in the tone of his voice.
“I got it…thanks,” Sam replied as Ruby mentioned she could have grabbed his phone and what not for him. It wasn’t as if he actually had the time to sit back and relax not now…especially not now with Dean run off to God only knew where.
“Yeah I suppose Dean would have taken that as cause to kill you and we can’t have that as I swear you’re the only demon in history whop gives a damn about anything other the mass death and destruction,” Sam said with a small smile. He was grateful for what she had done that was the problem; he was grateful yet he was worried about Dean at the same time.
Sam nodded his head with a slight flinch as Ruby said she would go out and grab some food and for Sam not to do much of anything. He watched as she walked out of the door and closed it on her way. He weakly stood up from the chair gulping down a few breaths of air as he tried to get his wits about him and he went over and locked and bolted the door.
He knew what he was about to do was a stupid idea but he also knew he had run out of options. He had felt bad about what he had just done to Ruby especially after all of the help she had given him but he only hoped she would understand and he didn’t die because of it.
He made his way as quickly as he could to the bathroom and cleaned up as much as possible and wrapped some clean bandages around the wounds on his arms taking off the bloody ones. He splashed some water on his face and locked eyes with his reflection in the mirror. His skin was pale and his eyes sunken into his face and black rimmed but he could always look worse he reckoned.
Once he was cleaned up he started to pack as much as he could as quickly as he could (which wasn’t very fast) into his duffel bag. He looked around the room checking he wasn’t leaving anything behind as he grabbed the medical bag and pulled out a bottle of pain pills and downed two of them hoping to God they would make him drowsy.
His eyes fell on the Colt on his bed and he tucked it into his duffel bag and pulled both his bag and the med bag over his shoulder with a grimace of pain. A light sheen of sweat had collected during his packing and what not as he was more then clearly exerting himself and the now blood bandages and pain were a clear sign of that but he didn’t have time to stop. Ruby would be back any moment and he had to be gone when she got back.
He grabbed a cheap pen from the desk and scribbled a rather simple note for Ruby when she got back.
Sorry Ruby.
He dropped it on the desk where his laptop and phone were. He packed the laptop and shoved his phone in his pocket scanning the room once more to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything. The room spun around him slightly but he gripped the door frame and took a deep breath to steady himself as he pulled open the door and slunk out into the night sky.
He slowly made his way down the line of cars parked outside of the motel and he let his eyes scan the area around the motel for any signs of Ruby and anyone else who might have been lurking about.
His eyes fell on to a black truck which was parked in the corner of the parking lot and he made his way slowly over to it. After a few tries and trying to steady his hands Sam was able to jimmy the lock on the truck and get in. He sat for a few moments inside of the car panting for breath and his head resting against the steering wheel.
He pulled a knife out of his duffel that he had thrown on the seat next to him and after a few more times then he would have liked he managed to get the to spring to life. He wasn’t as good as stealing cars as Dean was but he was good enough. Sucking in another deep breath and taking a drink from a bottle of water Sam gripped the steering wheel for a moment and then peeled out of the parking lot.
He had no idea where it was he was going yet but he remembered the calls he had had with Missouri and figured maybe heading Kansas way was the best place to start. As he made his way down the road he began to make calls hoping somebody had some answers.

When Ruby left, she didn't go to get food. No, she had other things to do, things that she wouldn't ever tell the Winchester's. Well it didn't concern them, so why should she, all they should be concerned about is her trying to save their asses.
She ended up at the corner of the motel, where she had quite a good view of Sam's door, from where she was in the shadows. She knew the Winchesters, and no way were they going to sit still when they were separated. Something that annoyed, and she was glad of at the same time. And sure enough Ruby watched as Sam emerged slowly from the room, as if he were trying to avoid her, if she had really gone to get food. Really, did he think she was that stupid? He was going to go after his brother sooner or later, and she was just letting it happen sooner. It was better than listening to his moaning and complaining for ages.
Moving forward a little as she watched him drive off in the truck, she had a smirk on her face, as she shook her head slightly, almost as if Sam was just mild entertainment to her. "Please Sam, I'm ten steps ahead remember." She said to herself, watching the back of the truck disappear. It wouldn't be long before he ran into her again. He was lucky that it wasn't now...But she had something more pressing to take care of...
