Melinda was beyond pissed. Not only was she pissed that Payne was in town but she was pissed that he'd gone and gotten himself attacked by some supernatural force. So she was pissed at the demon or what ever the heck it was that had attacked him.
She kept her car unlocked as she quickly ran towards the building. She hadn't heard from him in about a minute and it was starting to freak her out. "Rick? You there? Don't you dare die on me." she said as she got to the doors.
Well she was there. The problem was finding his room. He just had to go and secretly come to Lawrence didn't he?

Rick had become extremley still as he leaned with his back against the wall the blood still pouring from the wound in his stomach and pooling around him. He stared at the phone which had tumbeled from his hands and he wondered if Melinda was still on the line; he assumed she probably was and by now well on her way to freaking out about him not answering her.
"Melinda?" he called out his vocie low and weak and he didn't even know if she could hear him on the phone but he could feel himself beginning to lose the battle and he really preferred not to do it alone.
He struggeled to sit up slightly a hiss of pain making its way from his lips as the movement jared his injury and he fumbeled for the phone clasping it in his hand once more but his trembeling prevented him from keeping a grasp on it and he slumped back against the wall defeated.
"Melinda!" he called again louder this time hoping to maybe catch someones attention as his outcry pretty much zapped whatever remaining strength he had left.

As she entered the building she looked around, searching walls for maps or any indication of where she might find his room. Probably somewhere near the history department? Melinda clutched the phone by her side as she let out a frustrated sound looking like she wanted to throw something before pulling it back to her ear. "Rick? Rick are you there?" She waited a moment or two and with no reaction she cussed, "Damn it!"
She started to run around checking all sorts of rooms before she heard Rick yell into the phone. "Oh thank god you're still there! Rick. Rick I need you to tell me what building you're in." She bit her lip as she continued to search the various hallways. It wasn't a huge campus or building but there were plenty of places he could be. There were another two buildings she hadn't checked yet and she wasn't done in this one searching. She really needed him to help her out.

Rick thought for a moment as Melindoa asked what building he was in. That was a really good question and he had the answer for it...somewhere...he jsut didn't know it right this second.
"It's brick...red ones I think...bot wait I think they're all brick...," Rick muttered losing his focus as he fumbeled fro the phone once more.
"Is big...Grimauld..Hall...I think it;s called that....maybe...freaking steps too on top floor..."Rick replied sluggishly trying to be of any help that he could be but his strength and focus and everything else was slipping extremley fast.
"Mel?..." he didn't know what else was supposed to accompany that sentence but he lost conciousness before he could think on it. His only hope was that he ahd given Melinda enough information to find him before he bled to death on the floor of his office.

When Rick said brick she had to roll her eyes a bit. Almost everywhere was made of brick. She would have found his answer very comical if it weren't for the fact that she really needed to find him.
"Is big...Grimauld..Hall...I think it;s called that....maybe...freaking steps too on top floor..."
That was next door. Melinda quickly took off running down the corridor, heading for the nearest exit before slamming the door open and looked around into the darkness. She'd almost forgotten it was the middle of the night....almost.
She ran around to the other side of the building before seeing the sidewalk that led towards Grimauld hall.
"Mel?..."
"Yea?" she asked as she ran towards the large building, ignoring the fact that she was completely out of breathe. "Rick?" she asked into the silence as she continued to hurry towards the front entrance of the building.
After another bit of silence she cursed and quickly hung up as she reached the doors. "Please be unlocked, please be unlocked, please be unlocked," she said as she reached for the door. It opened. While raising a brow she quickly opened it and started for the sign that said stairs next to the restrooms. 'They really need better patrol of this place. People can get in waaay to easily,' she thought as she snatched off her heels and started to race up the stairs.
As she went she opened her phone again and quickly dialed 911....which she probably should have done sooner. One flight down....who knows how many more to go. "Hello?! Yea hi I have a friend who's been stabbed to death in the top floor of Grimauld Hall over at the University. His name is Rick Payne. I don't know how bad it is but he's passed out. He called me a few minutes ago and I'm climbed the stairs as we speak," she said, starting to take them two at a time.
She listened as the woman on the other end told her help would be there shortly and she snapped her phone shut, seeing the last flight of stairs. "You just had to get an office on the top floor didn't you?" she grumbled as she ran up the stairs and opened the door, looking around the hall and choosing to go left and looked at the names of the offices as she went.
After a few doors she saw one slightly open and knew it was the right one. Melinda quickly threw the door open the rest of the way before heading in and throwing her shoes and purse on the floor. Scanning the room she saw Rick right away and her eyes grew wide. That was definitely a lot of blood.
"Rick?" she said as she got closer to him. She knelt down next to him and pulled off her jacket quickly and tried to figure out where all the blood was coming from.
"Rick come on I need you to wake up," she said. Melinda turned him onto his back and saw the wound. "Oh my god," she said and started to reach for his shirt before drawing back for a second in hesitation. Shaking her head one last time she reached over and ripped his shirt more where the knife had cut before quickly taking her jacket and placing it over the wound.

Melinda looked down at his unconscious form and took a deep breathe. She knew that him not responding was bad. "Rick," she called, making sure to keep pressure on his wound before moving her other hand to his face and lightly tapping his cheek. "Hey I need to you wake up now. Help is on the way. An ambulance is coming and they're going to fix you right up."
She frowned, looking around the room then back at Rick. "You just can't stay out of trouble can you? And of course you just have to go and get stabbed in a place I don't know an EMT," she said, thinking of Jim. Come to think of it, she sort of wondered if her husband knew about any of this, as in the professor coming to Kansas as well.

Rick wasn't exactly sure when it was he had lost conciousness but it had obviously occured some time while he was on the hpone with Melinda. The pull of the darkness was a lot more welcoming then the pain which encompassed being awake. It was a lot easier to sleep it took less effort to begin with but he could hear an urgent vocie in the back of his mind and he knew he wouldn't be able to stay that way.
A shooting white flash of pain tore through him as he felt someone adding an imense amount of pressure on to his stab wound causing his entire senses to scream out in protest. He weakly tried to push whoever it was that was pushing on him away buit he didn't have the strength and could only groan in protest.
He forced his eyes opened and he was relatively surprised to find Melinda was the one pushing down upon his wound.
"That's not helping," he muttered in protest bringing up his blood stained hands to try and weakly push her away as the pressure was causing the pain to grow 10 fold.
"Not at all," he whispered giving up trying to push her away and just staring back at her his face drained of any color and his eyes sunken and pain filled.
"Hi," he whispered with as much of a grin as he could get which he reckoned wasn't much but he had tried.

Melinda felt herself being very tempted to hit him on the arm for scaring her like that but knew that it wasn't fair to hit an already injured man. She swatted his weak hands away. "Oh don't be such a baby. The paramedics will be here any second then you can deal with their methods. But for now you have to deal with me and what I remember from Jim," she said, shaking her head to move some hair out of her face.
"Hi? You call me in the middle of the night claiming you've been stabbed by a demon, which by the way I thought you didn't believe in, and end up passing out from," Melinda glanced him over, "Probable blood loss and scare me half to death when I finally arrive to a non-moving very meddlesome occult professor lying on the ground looking very much dead and all you can say is hi?!" Okay. So she could still muster a bit of annoyance at him since hitting him was out of the question. But hey at least he knew she was worked up enough to care about him as she took a deep breathe and seemed to listen for sounds of the ambulance that was sure to arrive.
Melinda looked back down at Professor Payne. "So...what did you do? Tell one of your bad jokes that students never appreciate?" she said trying to lighten the mood until the paramedics came.

“I’m not a baby…I could have died you know…could have died on you…for spite…then I could haunt you…it would be neat,” Rick muttered his eyes clenched in pain as he fought to keep his breathing steady as Melinda continued to hold true to her course of action of pushing down on the wound to stop the bleeding.
“I didn’t,” Rick muttered forcing his eyes open as he tried to shift his body slightly away from Melinda as he tried to focus on what had happened. He knew that girl was a demon though he had seen her eyes and that compiled with the weird kid who had come in before her all but cemented it. He hadn’t believed in demons or any such shit…that was of course till one had all but tried to gut him.
“Not meddlesome…besides you know you would be bored…without me,” Rick said his words becoming forced and slightly slurred from the pain and blood loss.
“I could have said bye…but then that is never a good way to start a conversation…” Rick whispered letting his eyes slip shut though he was for the moment conscious the strain of fighting to keep his eyes open was beginning to irritate him so he figured he would “rest” them for the time being.
“She stabbed me…she took my book…she needed it for the gate…she was possessed,” Rick muttered slipping in and out of coherent thought.
“She talked about Kate…she knew…” Rick muttered forcing his eyes open once more to stare up at Melinda.
“I think…I think Kate is thrilled about now,” he whispered allowing his eyes to rest at least half closed and half open as he shifted his sight on the growing puddle of blood around him. Yeah that was entirely too much blood to be a good thing.

Melinda sent him a look. "If you'd died out of spite I'd ignore you. ...jerk," she mumbled as an afterthought. "And I don't need you to make my life interesting, I see spirits remember?" she reminded him, trying to keep a good handle on covering the wound as he talked.
"Actually I met a psychic today. Yea I know don't remind me about the last one. But this woman...I don't know she seemed kind of cool. Then again I might be biased since she bought something from the shop." Melinda then shook her head. NOW was NOT the time to be going on about this sort of thing. She still had to check the woman out anyways.
Looking down at Rick she noticed he wasn't looking too good. 'Where's that damn ambulance?!'
As he talked she moved to sit next to his side, keeping the pressure on. "So not oppression like with those two from the house but actual full on possession?" Melinda looked a bit impressed. "And you say I have all the fun."
She froze at what he said next. “She talked about Kate…she knew…” Rick muttered forcing his eyes open once more to stare up at Melinda.
“I think…I think Kate is thrilled about now.”
She sighed, looking down at him and moved some hair out of his face. "The demon was probably just feeding off your insecurities like some ghosts do. Make you feel bad and really mess you up. Why would Kate be happy that you're..." she paused, "That you're bleeding all over your new office floor. The janitor is going to be so pissed."
There was no way she'd even admit that he might die. The guy was just too damn annoying to die anyways. And that was said in a good way. Perking up she looked towards the window as a sound started to grow in the distance.
Melinda smiled, "Hey Rick you hear that? They're here. Just hold on a little longer until they get here then you can start yelling at them about bad bedside manners," she teased.
It didn't take long for her to hear sounds of life in the building as the elevator kicked into life. When it arrived at their floor Melinda started to shout. "In here!"

Rick smiled faintly the color completely drained from his face and his almost took on a pale look about them instead of the normal blue that they usual were.
“You wouldn’t ignore me…you’d miss me…and you know it,” he smirked slightly his eyes closing again fully and this time he didn’t care enough to force them open. Rick nodded softly as Melinda explained she had met a psychic in town.
“Seems…like Greenacres…is more interesting then we thought,” Rick whispered his body shivering slightly as chill after chill ran through him and he could only help but wondering if this was what it felt like to die…he was pretty sure it was.
“Full on…head spinning…green vomit possession,” Rick muttered his voice growing lower and lower by the minute. He could taste blood in the back of his throat and he was trying to push down the urge to heave again.
Rick’s eyes opened as he felt Melinda’s hand brush against his forehead her fingers felt cold but at the same time soothing as he was pretty sure he was burning up yet freezing all at once.
“Why would Kate be happy that you're... That you're bleeding all over your new office floor…”
“Cause she hates me…” Rick muttered his eyes trying to focus on Melinda but every second which went by his vision seemed to grow more and more fuzzy and he was pretty sure he was looking at 3 of her at the present time and he was almost positive there was only supposed to be one of her.
Rick cringed slightly as Melinda’s voice rose and he slammed his eyes shut his head pounding in protest.
“You’re entirely too loud…,” Rick muttered as Melinda started to yell towards the door making him cringe as her voice tore through the room. He was pretty sure she wasn’t as loud as she sounded to him but it was loud enough.
Rick’s breathing was shallow and with his eyes closed he wanted nothing more then to find himself back in the grasp of unconsciousness even if Melinda was there it was beginning to hurt far more then he was willing to deal with.
“Would you be…be entirely pissed if I…sort of passed out now?” Rick asked his eyes opening slightly as he struggled to focus on one of the Melinda’s next to him.

It was a good sign that Rick kept going on with her jokes and making some of his own. She had to admit...Greenacres was a bit of a funny name for the town though it was beginning to fit in some strange way. "I'm not loud," Melinda said rolling her eyes, "You're just sensitive...like a big baby," she said smiling at him before turning and shouting again as the EMTs made their way down the hallway.
“Would you be…be entirely pissed if I…sort of passed out now?”
She quickly snapped her attention back to her friend and frowned, "Yes I would," she said starting to move so the workers could get a better look and she wouldn't be in the way. "Just a little longer Rick. Come on. I'll buy you as much Thai food as you want when you get out of the hospital," she said as the EMTs entered the room.

Rick flinched slightly as Melinda saw fit to holler once more…ok he was pretty sure she was now just loud and it was no longer him but then again he was sometimes wrong…rarely but sometimes it was known to happen.
“You’re definitely loud,” he muttered wrapping his arms across his abdomen with a groan. He had hoped the action would grant him some warmth but it had only proved to make the pain worse. Apparently any sort of movement could now be classified as bad.
“You’re high maintenance” Rick muttered weakly as Melinda shared that she would be pissed if he decided to pass out.
Rick forced his eyes open as the sound of other voices filled the room and all but screamed around him; ok so maybe his hearing was being a little sensitive due to the gallons of blood on the ground around him. He groaned in pain as he was shifted one way or the other and pain seemed to rip through him.
The jarring and movements caused the pain to grow ten fold and the urge to try and get away from the insulting hands all the stronger but there was nowhere he could get to.
“Ok…stop,” he all but pleaded his eyes clenched in agony. A fit of coughs tore through his body and he felt himself cough up a mouth full of blood on to the floor next to him. He tried to force his eyes open but the world around him was clouded in a haze and his world quickly crashed down around him as he lost consciousness.

Melinda let out a sigh of relief as the people hurried over and started to quickly work on Rick. She removed her hand when one man replaced hers and scurried out of their way. "He was stabbed maybe half an hour ago?" she said not knowing what else to say.
She watched as Rick continued to try and move. “Ok…stop,” she heard him say before watching him pass out. Shoot. That was bad.
Melinda squeezed her hands, not knowing what to do as the paramedics worked on Rick. A stretcher was brought in and she knew they were taking him to the hospital. A medic told her which one as they were in the elevator and she told them she'd follow behind in her car.
Though it was only a few minute drive it was sure to feel like forever.
