To say Samael missed his wife would be an understatement. While seven months may seem like an eternity to some it only felt like....no it pretty much felt like eternity. Well...eternity and a day really. For an immortal angel seven months shouldn't have felt quite as long as it did for him. The fact that he was worried about her probably contributed to the fact.
Something was going on. Samael wasn't stupid in believing his wife wasn't involved either. The fact that she had been gone so long was all the proof he needed. Sure he'd get an erratic note or demon stopping by to deliver a message from her but that was it. No one night stays at home, no long phone conversations, no cuddling.
He had heard the rumors. She was trying to raise Lucifer. Samael was not pleased in the least. Perhaps this was one reason she hadn't been home. She knew he was touchy on the subject of the Morning Star; especially on the subject of his wife being anywhere near the Morning Star.
So there he sat, the former Angel of Death, alone in his living room. Munching on cold pizza and flipping TV channels. What a lame life he had turned to. He'd had a busy week however. He was trying to learn as much as he could about what was going on. Now all he had to do was wait.
Wait for his updates.
And so he decided to watch TV to kill time. Getting tired of changing channels, he stopped at a random one and took a bite of his pizza. He looked up at the screen and scowled. Gilmore Girls.
This was going to be a long wait.

Lilith felt strange.
Often times, Lilith had weird feelings. New or unsuitable hosts. Failure. Genuine joy. But this was different. This time, Lilith felt sad.
As a demon, Lilith was fairly certain she wasn't supposed to feel sad. Anger, yes. Frustration, yes. A sadistic sort of glee, absolutely. But sadness? No... that was supposed to have been burned from her soul aeons ago.
She wholeheartedly blamed Samael. If he hadn't gone and made her love him when she'd been human, then she wouldn't miss him so much right now. It had been seven months since she'd actually seen him. Her notes and messengers had not been enough... as they couldn't bring anything back for her. Not only that... they had been few and far between. She so rarely had time these days to write a note... and finding messengers was hard... it wasn't exactly common knowledge that she had been married since the dawn of time.
Perhaps that was why she found herself now, outside the human house that Samael lived inside. She'd been there several times in the past, though she didn't think she could call it home. It was too... human. But it was tolerable, for now.
And so, Lilith, the first demon, the nightmare child, did one of the many things she really hated having to do. She knocked on the door.

Samael had made it up to the crust when a knock sounded on the front door. Holding the crust in the corner of his mouth her muted the TV and looked around suspiciously. Who in the hell was knocking on his door? No one ever came to visit him and his messengers wouldn't be back for another few days at least.
The knocking sounded again and he quickly scambled to his feet. Dusting his hands on his sides first he pulled the crust out of his mouth, but not before biting off a small piece. "I'm coming, I'm coming," he called as he entered the hallway. Stuffing most of the crust into his mouth he went to peek in the peep-hole.
He frowned. Who the hell was that? He couldn't get a very good look at the figure on the other side of the door. At least it wasn't a torch-bearing mob or anything. Swallowing, he popped the last bit of crust in his mouth before shrugging and opening the door.
As soon as their eyes met Samael froze. "Lils?"
The next second he found himself coughing as the crust started to go down the wrong way. Taking a step back he mentally cursed his vessel. Of all the times to choke on food it had to be now?

Lilith began to wonder if it had been a good idea to come. Surley Samael had heard about what she was currently working on. And he can't have been happy about it. She was by no means afraid of her husband... not in the slightest... but that didn't mean she wanted to have to watch him brood.
But the door was opened before she had enough of a chance to change her mind, and she was face to face with the familiar young vessel that the angel had used since... well... for a while now.
"Lils?"
"Samael," she greeted, raising her eyebrows at him as he began to choke on whatever it was he had in his mouth.
"I can come back later," she said, taking a step back. "You know, if this isn't a good time."

"Samael," she greeted.
Raising a hand to his throat he coughed for a moment.
"I can come back later," he heard her say.
Looking up he waved his hand at her slightly before finally regaining his voice and breath. "You know, if this isn't a good time."
"No," he said, shaking his head as he straightened up. "No, now is a great time," he reassured her. "I'm not doing anything. Well...aside from my vessel trying to do a rendition of 'death by pizza'." He gave a wry smile.
Okay. So not that funny.
He stood awkwardly in the doorway, leaning on the open door. His eyes fell to the floor before looking back up at her. "Oh," he said, quickly taking a step back. "Come in."
He berated himself mentally. Oh, yeah. Leave the wife standing in the doorway. Don't invite her in or anything. Idiot.

"No, No, now is a great time, I'm not doing anything. Well...aside from my vessel trying to do a rendition of 'death by pizza'."
Lilith took a step closer to him as he straightened up, but her eyebrows stayed raised at his rather lame attempt at a joke. "So... angels can choke? Handy information to have..."
She looked at her husband expectantly, tilting her head to the side as she waited for him to move from the door way so she could enter the house. It seemed he was extremely surprised to see her, if his flusteredness was anything to go by.
"Oh, Come in."
Stepping through the doorway, Lilith gave the angel a small smirk, before taking in her surroundings. It hadn't been too long since she'd last been in the small house, but being so used to the grand interior of the church, it all seemed a little... cramped. She narrowed her eyes at the television show playing, and the pizza box on the floor. This was hardly what one expected the den of an angel to look like.
"What have you been doing with yourself?" she asked, looking back at Samael. It saddened her to think that this was how he'd been living for the past seven months. He deserved better.

"So... angels can choke? Handy information to have..."
It was hard for Samael to decide whether to be amused or scowl at this comment. "Not funny Lils," he said with a slight headshake. If she looked closely however she would have seen that he was indeed amused.
Stepping through the doorway, Lilith gave the angel a small smirk, before taking in her surroundings.
Samael followed her into the front room and watched as she looked around. He ran a hand through his hair nervously. The longer she looked the harder he found the urge to push her out and tell her to stay in the hall until it was clean. He had always been a bit of a neat freak.
He settled instead with picking up the now empty pizza box and turning the TV off with a quick click. He disappeared for a moment to throw the box in the trashcan in the kitchen right around the corner.
Reappearing he heard her speak.
"What have you been doing with yourself?" she asked, looking back at him.
Samael shrugged. What had he been doing with himself? Worrying over her mostly. Taking a spare job here or there from Azrael. And just recently....trying to figure out what roll his wonderful wife was playing in this big war he'd been working so hard to stay out of. It would not be pretty no matter who won.
"I've been around," he finally said. "Azrael's sent a job or two my way so that's kept me entertained."
"What about you?"

"Not funny Lils,"
"It was a little funny," she told him, noting the slight amusement on his face. Of course she'd been perfectly serious... knowing angels could choke would save a lot of time and energy.
"I've been around, Azrael's sent a job or two my way so that's kept me entertained."
Lilith narrowed her eyes at him for a moment, before examining the couch for cleanliness and sitting down. "You're better than that," she told him seriously. "You shouldn't have to work for him." She may have been a little bias, but Lilith did believe that Samael was better than Azrael.
"What about you?"
"Oh you know, a bit of this, a bit of that," she said with a shrug. "Working mostly."
She did want to tell her husband what she had been doing the past seven months. But it was hard to know what it was safe to tell him, what with him not having actually picked a side yet. There was no telling what he would do with any information she gave him... and then there was the part where he got all grouchy whenever a certain former angel is mentioned.

"You're better than that."
Samael sighed. Here they went again.
"You shouldn't have to work for him."
A hand flew to his hair again as he shrugged. "It's fine Lils, really." He never liked talking about his voluntary step-down as the Angel of Death. "Azrael has been doing a great job. The reapers get along well with him," he said while picking a DVD case off the coffee table and putting it back on the shelf next to the TV.
He took a seat across from her in the armchair and watched her as she spoke in response to his question. He wondered how detailed she would get or if she'd just avoid the question. He already knew she probably wouldn't tell him, and for that he was just the smallest bit more heartbroken. She didn't trust him anymore.
"Oh you know, a bit of this, a bit of that," she said with a shrug. "Working mostly."
Biting his tongue, Samael fought the urge to say what he really wanted to; to act like a child and complain that she wasn't telling him everything. 'Why won't you just tell me Lilith. I don't want to hear it from someone else.' or 'You were busy trying to save him weren't you?'
Instead he readjusted his seat and frowned slightly. "You finally make it top side and all you seem to do is work. I'd always thought when you got out that you'd at least take a vacation from it all," he said. That was good. Make it seem more like he was jealous of the work...rather than the man.
"I don't even know what you do anymore. One day I wish you'd explain to me what you do exactly. I think the last time I saw you, you said something about going into contracting souls. I didn't think that would take up all your time so you couldn't contact me for seven months."
He looked slightly hurt by the end of this and rubbed his neck for a moment before simply resting his palm on the back of his neck. His eyes were sad as he looked at her. He should have been used to her not being there. Since she had been freed however he found himself missing her worse.

"It's fine Lils, really. Azrael has been doing a great job. The reapers get along well with him,"
Lilith caught her bottom lip between her teeth as she fought the urge to press the argument. She didn't want this to turn into a fight.
"You finally make it top side and all you seem to do is work. I'd always thought when you got out that you'd at least take a vacation from it all,"
A small frown creased her forehead and Lilith moved from her place on the couch and settled herself on Samael's lap, resting her head against his shoulder. "I'm sorry," she said quietly. He had to be the one person she would apologise to and mean it. "I just... it's important."
"I don't even know what you do anymore. One day I wish you'd explain to me what you do exactly. I think the last time I saw you, you said something about going into contracting souls. I didn't think that would take up all your time so you couldn't contact me for seven months."
A twinge of guilt went through her and she sighed. She had been doing much more than contracting souls... but he wouldn't be happy to hear it. Lilith lifted her head so she could look her husband in the eye and kissed him lightly. "You know I've had... other tasks," she said softly, absently brushing a lock of his hair off his face. "I don't believe for a second you don't know what's going on outside this house."

Samael sat quietly as his wife rose from the couch and moved to sit down in his lap. Readjusting her slightly in his lap he wrapped an arm around her back. His other arm rested lazily on her legs as she laid her head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly. "I just... it's important."
He rested his cheek on her head for a moment and closed his eyes. Of course it was important...it just wasn't anything to do with him. There was a time when he was the most important thing in her life. A twinge of jealousy went through him that he tried to bite back. Oh, how he wished he'd cut that silver tongue out of a certain person's mouth before they'd gone anywhere near his wife.
And why did it have to be his wife? What had they ever done to make him do this?
Lilith sighed and Samael lifted his head as she pulled back. She gave him a light kiss that he barely had the opportunity to return before she pulled away again.
"You know I've had... other tasks," she said softly, brushing a lock of his hair off his face. "I don't believe for a second you don't know what's going on outside this house."
Samael looked away. A hand reached up to grab hers and he held it for a moment. Turning back he looked at their hands. Yes. Yes he had a pretty good idea. And he knew who the tasks were for.
"I-" he started before glancing at her then back to the hands. It was hard to fight the urge to throw her off his lap and disappear somewhere. Somewhere far away from her where she couldn't hurt him anymore.
"I want you to say it," he finally said. His gaze locked onto hers. "I want to hear you say it."
His light grip on her hand moved to her wrist and grew slightly tighter. "I don't want to hear it from some no name demon down at the bar or hear it whispered behind my back when I go to see Azrael. I want to hear it from your lips."
"I want you to say it Lilith."

Lilith stared at her hand as Samael held it, and for a moment - only a moment - she was jealous of her vessel. It was, after all, not her own hand that held Samael's, but the girl she inhabited. Lilith herself could no longer touch anything outside of hell. And then the moment passed as she decided it didn't matter. There was nothing she could do about it now, and regardless, she was in complete control of the vessel, and could feel everything it felt.
"I want you to say it," Lilith's eyes snapped to Samael and she held his gaze though she did not like where this was going. "I want to hear you say it."
Lilith shook her head. If she told him, he would be angry. And while she wasn't afraid of him, she was afraid of regretting coming to see him.
She inhaled sharply as his grip moved from her hand to his wrist and tightened, but she said nothing. It hurt, true enough, but she was Lilith, pain didn't bother her all that much. It was just surprising.
"I don't want to hear it from some no name demon down at the bar or hear it whispered behind my back when I go to see Azrael. I want to hear it from your lips."
If anyone else had spoken to her that way, she would have destroyed them. And even though she couldn't destroy Samael, she could certainly have found a way to make him hurt a lot. But he was different. He made her different. When she was with him, she could almost pretend she hadn't spent the last however many millenia in hell. Almost.
"I want you to say it Lilith."
She glared at him. He was so stubborn. Had he always been this stubborn?
"I'm raising Lucifer," she said behind clenched teeth. "And ending the fucking world."
"Are you happy now?"

Samael picked up on the head shaking and the inhaled breath. She seemed to get like this when she had something she didn't want to say; when she wanted to avoid confrontation. She had always been bad with confrontation. He ignored her glare and waited patiently.
His gaze was even as he looked straight in her eyes. It seemed almost like a millennium to him before she responded. This probably had something to do wit the fact that he did have an idea about what she was up to.
"I'm raising Lucifer," she said behind clenched teeth. "And ending the fucking world."
"Are you happy now?"
Samael stared at her for a moment before disappearing from the chair.
He reappeared on the other side of the room. His face was a mask as he stared at the wall for a moment. Turning he took in her face before putting his back to her and waving a hand, letting out a yell. The end table, lamp and all, went crashing into the wall.
Shoulders hunched he walked a few steps towards the curtained windows. Sam ran a hand over his face. It rested on his chin as he closed his eyes.
A quick turn and he knocked everything off the desk next to him with a swipe of his arms.
No. He was not happy.

Lilith let out a surprised 'oomph' as she hit the chair. She repositioned herself to look less awkward and glanced over at where Samael had reappeared. This was why she hadn't wanted to tell him what she'd been doing. For this exact reason.
"Sam...?" she asked cautiously, taking a sudden interest in the patterns she could make on the arm of the chair with her finger. She should have kept her mouth shut, should have put the conversation in a different direction or distracted him with -
Her head snapped around to Samael as his yell snapped her out of her thoughts. She managed to refrain from jumping when the end table and lamp hit the wall, though she did blink faster than was necessary. She opened her mouth to speak again but was cut off as he swept everything off of his desk.
"Baby please," she said, a slight plea in her voice. Lilith stood from the chair and took several steps towards her husband before stopping suddenly, deciding he probably wouldn't want her too close. "I..." she pressed her finger tips together until all her fingers lined up. "... don't be like this."

"Baby please."
Samael barely registered her voice as he looked up at the ceiling, his eyes shut. A pained look crossed his face that he quickly wiped away as he moved to look at the floor. He slumped against the desk. He leaned forward putting his weight on his arms, his hands spread, pushing down on the surface as he held himself up.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw her take a few steps closer and stop. "I..." she started. "... don't be like this."
Raising a hand he ran it through his hair and turned to give her a look before looking away at one of the walls. "Really? Well then how should I be Lilith?" he questioned. Standing straight he turned to face her.
"Just all fine and dandy that you're trying to raise my fallen brother? Who not only fell," he said, raising both hands now in front of him holding up his pointer fingers as if to say 'wait for it, it get's better now doesn't it?'. "But fell for all the wrong reasons. And not only that; seduced my wife and got her dragged into hell where I couldn't see her for how many millenia?"
He looked at her and lowered his hands.
"Where I couldn't protect her."
Samael held her gaze silently.
After a moment he tore his eyes away from hers. "Yeah Lilith.... I'm totally fine with that. I'm not going to be angry at all," he said, his voice dripping with hurt and sarcasm.
