Rick flopped down on the couch in his small apartment he was renting in Lawrence and propped his feet up on the coffee table and dialed Melinda's number as he shoveled some Thia noodles into his mouth and waited for her to answer the phone.
"8:00 date Mel. pick up the phone...chop chop," he muttered into the phone as it rang in his ear.

Melinda quickly grabbed it from her back pocket as she continued to look at a vase she had pulled out of a box. She was trying to decide where exactly to put it. "Hello?" she said as she brushed some hair out of her face.

"Hello yourself there Dorthy," Rick replied with a mouth half full of food when he ehard Melindo answer the phone.
"Any sign of the wizard of Oz yet?" Rick asked with a laugh though he was the last one who should have been laughing being that he was in Lawrence too, but he still had the upper hand of Melinda not knowing that and he would keep it that way for as long as he could.

"Ooh. You were so right in your messages I did miss you. And your bad jokes," she said making a face but laughing a bit. "I wouldn't go as far as to call this place Oz but it certainly is less populated than home."
Melinda picked up the vase and moved it to another display before smiling, satisfied. "You eating noodles?" she asked.

“See I knew you missed me and my jokes aren’t bad…well not all of them anyways,” Rick said with a laugh as he shoved another fork full of noodles into his mouth and tried not to chew too noisily into the receiver.
“Yeah it’s a fuc…according to Wikipedia the place is like Greenacres,” Rick said quickly correcting himself.
“Of course I am now that you aren’t around I have had to resort to feeding myself again…I tell you it’s a terrible habit to get into and you also learn a bit more about food poisoning that way,” Rick said setting the container of noodles down on the table and staring up at the ceiling.
“So when do you think you’ll be going back to Grandview?” The question was simple enough though he was more then wanting to know too as he missed home and The University of Kansas was nowhere near as welcoming to his “interesting” line of work.

"Just don't eat any shrimp then. You and shrimp just don't mix," Melinda said, walking towards the counter and leaning against it, surveying her new store.
"When am I coming back? Well I don't know. I mean I just got here. I need to be here for a while to at least get it up off the ground you know?" Tired of standing she moved to sit on the counter. She'd been running around straightening everything today. She just always had to be doing something and now her feet were scolding her for it.
"I'm sure that if Jim can live without me for a bit you can Rick," she said, shaking her head. "Besides you're not the one stuck in Greenacres now are you?"

"Got it boss no shrimp ... besides we're too far from the ocean here anyways," Rick muttered eyeing the noodles and shrim which sat on the coffee table in front of him. That had not been his finest moment; and then he had realized what he had said. He listened for a moment to see if Melinda had caught and then figured it would be far too obvious if he brought it up so he just let it go. Maybe calling hadn't been a very good plan on his part.
"Awhile?...Like what are we talking a few weeks?...Months? A year?...Just wondering is all you know so we can um plan the surprise return party for you when you get back and I mean besides the fact that there has been an uprising in haunted houses since you've been gone," Rick replied with a smirk.
"Yeah your right...Jim...your husband he's got it all doesn't he?" Rick asked not meaning to sound as bitter as it had come out. He stood up from the couch and tossed the thai container into the trash bin before staring out the window and down at the town square below him.
"Yeah I'm not in Greenacres...just you Mel...just you," he muttered.

Melinda listened to Rick go on and on and her face went from it's normal smile to a bit of a frown. "Rick is everything alright?" she started to ask. One second he had been talking about some return party the next he'd gone into a ...well for lack of better word, bitter mood saying something about Jim having it all and then her being alone in 'Greenacres' as they had now dubbed Lawrence.

Rick kept atring out the window for a moment having nothing to do with the town save for Melinda and he quickly closed the blinds and plopped back down ont he couch as he heard Melinda ask him if everything was ok.
"Alright? Yeah everything is just peachy Mel...just peachy so um say something..anything really cause I think I'm far too mcuh and I didn't call to hear my voice yours is much sexier so get to it," Rick said trying to play off his earlier mood.

Melinda was still a bit suspicious but rolled her eyes. "Alright. For a moment there it sounded like you were suddenly possessed or something," she said, hopping off the counter. "Well the shop seems to be doing good so far. I had a few customers today.."

"Nope not possessed by anything other then what I'm pretty sure was bad Thai food," Rick said with a laugh as he reached over the couch and grabbed a beer and twisted the cap open as he listened to Melinda talk about the store.
"Good deal customers are always a plus...so let's see you've got the store open and people spending their hard earned money on the junk you're good to go. When you going back to Grandview again?" he asked with a laugh if only she knew how much he wasn't kidding.

"Didn't I tell you to lay off the shrimp?" she teased.
Melinda made a face looking a bit annoyed. "I'm so tempted to send you a...a....a punch in the box," she said, unable to think of anything else. So shoot her. It was getting into the evening and she'd had a long day so her comebacks weren't all that great at the moment.

"That you did; but it doesn't count when you tell me after I have eaten half of it," Rick added back tou Melinda's comment.
He couldn't help but laugh at her attempted comeback.
"Now see you've been away freom me for far too long if you all you can come up with is sending me a punch in the box...what is that anyways? I'm rather interested to hear this explanation if you will. Entertainment is rather soarce around here without all of your undead whispering going around. I mean I actually have to teach over ehre...how lame is that right?"

"Well maybe if you didn't end up teaching like an old dead guy it wouldn't be boring," she shot back, a bit of a smirk on her face as she pulled out a yellow pages book from her desk. It was late and swinging by somewhere sounded great. She just had to find the somewhere to swing at.
Her comeback wasn't exactly truthful. She'd sat in on at least one of his classes and it had been a bit interesting. Okay...more than a bit. But that might only have been because she actually needed to know about this stuff in her line of added work. "Alright fine I take it back. I was just kidding anyways. So had any kids fall asleep of freak out about any stories this week?" she asked curiously. You never knew if something funny would happen in Grandview.

Rick smirked at Melinda's comments; she always had a way with words which were truley her own.
"Now I don't know baout you but I have yet to see a old dead guy teaching...though then again I don't see old dead guys at all...that is all you there Mel...besides you know you like a good old fashion occult lecture," Rick etorted with a smile which faded as he realized he had shit to do after he got off the phone with Melinda.
"Um the kids are rather interesting this week...whole new batch of pains in the ass you could say...So what is htere to do over in Greenacres Mel?"
